CHARTER SCHOOL OWNER SENTENCED

Marcus May, the former owner of the Newpoint Charter School here in Pensacola, has been sentenced to 20 years in state prison and fined 5 million dollars. May was convicted of two counts of racketeering and one count of organized fraud after a four-week trial. It’s one of the first racketeering cases involving a charter school management company brought in the state. Circuit Judge Thomas Dannheiser sentenced Marcus May yesterday and described his conduct as a shocking pattern of pervasive theft.
