DETENTION FACILITY DEMOLITION

Escambia County is moving closer to demolishing the Central Booking and Detention Facility that was destroyed in a natural gas explosion four years ago. Although no date has been set for the start of the demolition. County Commissioner Lumon May will holding a town hall meeting Wednesday his evening to ensure that residents in the Englewood neighborhood will have all of their questions answered before the work begins. The County Commission awarded the contract to Jobe’s Dirt Work, and the project is estimated to cost $584,000. The building exploded in April 2014, killing two inmates and injuring more than 100. The Town Hall meeting will begin at 5:30 p.m. today at the Boys & Girls Club Englewood Community Center at 2751 North “H” Street.
