LACK OF BAY COUNTY STORM SHELTERS

The 2019 Atlantic Hurricane Season begins in about six weeks, but Bay County is facing a lack of shelters. Right now only one school that can be used as a shelter in the event of a storm, which is Deane Bozeman. All other schools are too damaged to be able to serve as shelters and School Superintendent Bill Husfelt says the district is facing over 250 million dollars in uninsured losses with several schools still operating out of temporary buildings. He said he hopes the urgency of the situation will bring action from lawmakers. County Manager Bob Majka said that the county is working with the school district to try and prioritize repairs to Northside Elementary, Deerpoint Elementary and Rutherford High School.
