The Escambia County School District plans to hire Campus Security Officers to protect local elementary schools beginning next school year.   Escambia County School Superintendent Malcolm Thomas said the officers will be there to protect students in our schools during the school day, 10 months a year. They will have no law enforcement authority except that necessary to prevent or deal with an active assailant incident. He is hoping retired military and retired law enforcement officers, who have maintained their weapons’ permits and skills, will see the program as a way to continue to serve the community and protect students.
