FIRST SEA TURTLE NEST

Biologists say the first sea turtle nest of the year has been found on the beach in the Fort Pickens area of the Gulf Island National Seashore. Sea turtle nesting season generally runs from mid-May through late summer and the national seashore serves as prime nesting habitat for many species of sea turtle. Gulf Islands Superintendent Dan Brown reminds people to turn off outdoor lights that can distract and disorient the turtles and can lead them away from the Gulf of Mexico where they can fall victim to predators or be run over by cars.
