BAY COUNTY LANDFILL EXPANSION

The Bay County Commission has approved an 18.4 million-dollar expansion of its main landfill because it’s overloaded with Hurricane Michael debris. Commissioners awarded the contract to Phoenix Construction Services to expand the Steelfield Road Landfill in Panama City Beach. So far the county has removed more than 7 million cubic yards of debris from the unincorporated areas and estimates the total cost for debris removal will surpass 300 million dollars. However, it is expected federal reimbursement will most of that cost and the County plans to ask the Federal Emergency Management Agency to reimburse it for the landfill expansion as well.
