FLORIDA PYTHONS

Technology is helping to deal with invasive pythons in Florida. Biologists have been capturing male pythons, surgically inserting radio tracking devices in them, then releasing them back into the wild. During the December-through-April breeding season, the males – nick-named Judas Snakes – lead researchers to breeding females, which means that several snakes can be eliminated when the signal is followed to the location of the Judas snake. However, the program is costly as the transmitters cost about $250 each and often helicopters have to be used to track the signals.
