NEW BAY BRIDGE

The Florida Department of Transportation says it will begin moving traffic from the old bridge across Pensacola Bay to the first expanse of the new replacement bridge on July 28th. The existing bridge, which opened in 1960, carries more than 55,000 vehicles between Pensacola and Gulf Breeze each day. FDOT spokesman Ian Satter said westbound traffic will flow on the old bridge until August 1st, when traffic will move off that bridge and switch the westbound traffic to the new bridge. Once that happens demolition of the current bridge will begin and crews will start construction of the second bridge. The entire bridge project is scheduled for completion in mid-2021.
