TEACHER BONUS LAWSUIT

The Florida Department of Education is being sued over claims it shortchanged teachers when it paid bonuses awarded by the Legislature.   The class-action lawsuit says in 2018 the department illegally ordered school districts to subtract the employer’s portion of Social Security and Medicare taxes from the amount given to teachers under the state’s “Best and Brightest” program. The lawsuit says the state can’t push its tax obligation onto teachers and illegally saved millions by having teachers pay the full amount. Neither the department nor Governor Ron Desantis had any immediate comment about the suit.
