NEW PENSACOLA BAY BRIDGE

It has been a month since the state announced plans to shift traffic from the old Pensacola Bay Bridge to the first section of the new bridge, but the move has been postponed twice. Ian Satter, spokesman for the Florida Department of Transportation’s regional office, said the switch will happen when the bridge meets all of the state’s inspection criteria. Satter said lighting and a barrier wall must still be completed. The 400 million-dollar replacement project is the largest infrastructure project in the history of Northwest Florida. The existing bridge, which opened in 1960, carries more than 55,000 vehicles between Pensacola and Gulf Breeze each day. The entire project is scheduled for completion in mid-2021.
