A 26-year-old Cantonment man is being held for a stabbing death in Freeport here in the panhandle. Jefferson Helton, was arrested Friday afternoon after fleeing the scene on foot. Helton and the victim – 26-year old Sandy Berlin – were involved in an altercation just after midnight Friday morning and Berlin was stabbed several times in the chest. He was transported to an area hospital where he died Saturday. Helton was captured Friday and was treated for injuries sustained in the altercation with the victim. Charges are still pending the conclusion of the investigation by the Walton County Sheriff’s Office. Helton remains in the Walton County Jail without bond.
