ELECTION 11-9-16
No real surprises when it came to the political races in Escambia County. Starting with the Presidential race, as expected, Donald Trump was an easy winner over Hillary Clinton. In the race for the Congressional seat that opened up with the retirement of Jeff Miller, Matt Gaetz won by a substantial margin over his Democratic opponent, Steven Specht.
As for the various State races; Doug Broxton was elected to a State Senate seat over two write-in candidates, Republican Clay Ingram was reelected in District 1 and Republican Frank White was elected to the District 2 seat by a large margin. In District 3 former Santa Rosa County Commissioner Jayer Williamson, had no opposition and has already been elected to the Florida House.
Incumbent School Superintendent Malcolm Thomas won reelection to a 3rd term with 65% of the vote over Claudia Williams. Sheriff David Morgan had 73% of the vote as he, too, won a 3rd term. Scott Lunsford has been elected Escambia County Tax Collector with 65% of the vote over his Democratic challenger, Deb Moore.
In the County Commission races School Board member, Jeff Bergosh won the district 1 seat with almost 70% f the vote. In District 3 incumbent Luman May won a second term with no difficulty, and in District 5 Stephen Barry was reelected in the August primary.
In the 3 ECUA races, incumbent Vicki Campbell won reelection with 97% of the vote over a write-in candidate, incumbent Elvin McCorvey easily defeated four No Party Affiliate candidates to win the ECUA District 3 seat and in District 5 incumbent Larry Walker also won reelection by a large margin.
For the two seats in contention for the Pensacola Council District 1 incumbent P.C. Wu was reelected with 60% of the vote and incumbent Jewel Cannada-Wynn had close to 60% of the vote as she was reelected in District 7.
The only incumbent office-holder to lose his election was Freddie McCall, the Mayor of Century in North Escambia County. He was defeated by Henry Hawkins who had almost 60% of the vote.
