Escambia County and the Florida Department of Environmental Protection are in the process of removing an estimated 20,000 old tires from B&S Tires on Lillian Highway. It is part of an effort to eliminate mosquito breeding areas. In February Escambia County Environmental Code Enforcement found numerous violations. The site was also out of compliance with its DEP permit, which authorized a maximum of 5,500 tires to be stored at the site. ADVERTISING DEP can seek to recover the funds from the site owner or person responsible for the accumulation. The work is expected to be completed in a few weeks.
