It has been 11 months since a tornado devastated part of the town of Century in North Escambia County. However, over half the applicants for the two largest assistance programs – The SHIP program, the State Housing Initiatives Partnership program; and the Community Development Block Grants program, have been turned down. According to information provided by Escambia County, five Block Grant applications have been approved for housing demolition. There have been 59 applications for the SHIP program, but only 27 have been approved because the applicant was often over the maximum income limits, was not the actual property owner, or the property damage was not caused by the tornado.
