Several hundred people gathered in the cafeteria of Tate High School last night to attend a Town Hall Meeting put on by International Paper. The mill in Cantonment was shut-down by an explosion in a pulp digester . There were no injuries or fatalities, but the mill suffered extensive damage. Attendees were allowed to ask questions and many expressed concerns about possible health risks from the material ejected by the explosion, the scope of the clean-up as well as the possible loss of value of real estate. Mill Manager Brett DeJong (“De Yong”) said over 100 houses have been cleaned so far with more to be done. He said the exact cause of the explosion has yet to be determined, but the investigation is on-going. Dr. John Lanza from the Florida Department of Health said those who suffered skin irritations or breathing problems should contact their physicians, but did not believe there is a significant health threat at this time. Those with questions or claims should call 968-4208.
