PAPA ROCK 2-7-17

Local radio legend Papa Rock died Saturday at the age of 84. His real name was Grover Rivers and he spent 62 years in broadcasting. In declining health, the radio icon was looking forward to his retirement party this past weekend but died peacefully Saturday night. Hundreds of his fans and admirers still attended the celebration. An Alabama native, Papa Rock began at WMOZ in Mobile and worked at radio stations in Louisiana and Tennessee, as well for WBOP and Magic 106.1 where he hosted a Saturday music show for his last ten years. He is survived by his wife, Carrie Rivers, and six children. Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Greater Union Baptist Church. Burial will be 11 a.m. Monday at Barrancas National Cemetery.
