Escambia Fire Rescue and the Florida Forest Service responded to a fire at the Rolling Hills Landfill yesterday around 5:30pm. The fire affected about five acres of land- clearing debris located in the southeast area of the property but was not in the construction and demolition area of the landfill currently being remediated by the Florida Department of Environmental Protection. The fire appears to be contained and does not pose a risk to surrounding homes. The landfill was closed in 2014 after the Florida Department of Environmental Protection revoked the landfill’s permit. A comprehensive closure plan began in the fall of 2016 and is expected to be completed by the end of this month.
