The City of Century’s Town Council is accusing Mayor Henry Hawkins of giving town employees illegal pay raises and paid time off in violation of the City Charter. Hawkins, who took office in January, admitted he has given each town employee a 53-cent per hour pay increase and allowed each employee to take four paid hours per month off to boost employee morale. The money to fund the pay increase came from the salary of street department employee who left and was not replaced. However, Council President Ann Brooks said Hawkin’s actions were in excess of a $500 spending limit imposed by the town charter and employee raises and policies have to be approved by the Council. The Council then voted to remove the pay raise and eliminate the newly granted paid time off for each employee.
