Mayor Ashton Hayward and the city of Pensacola are being sued by the former city fire chief who says he was fired as an act of retaliation. Matt Schmitt says he was terminated for filing a discrimination complaint to the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission that then deputy chief Joseph Glover, who is black, was not being paid appropriately and that there was a racial component in the pay inequity. Hayward has since been removed from the suit as Mayor, but remains a defendant as an individual. Schmitt is seeking a declaratory judgment, equitable relief and monetary damages.
