The construction project to relocate a portion of Fort Pickens Road is continuing. Dan Brown, Park Superintendent of the Gulf Islands National Seashore, said a one-and-a-half-mile section of the road is prone to washing out every time there is a storm. Even routine weather events can bury the road under four feet of sand, which can take about 10 days to 2 weeks to remove. Brown said the problem section of road is being moved away from the gulf, towards the bay. The new road will wind around the dunes and have a slower speed limit of 25 miles per hour. Brown said the 2.4 million-dollar cost of the project is paid for by Federal Highway funds and should be completed by the end of February.
