International Paper has released their preliminary findings on the cause of the January 22nd explosion at their Cantonment mill. They say the explosion was caused by a combination of gases normally produced during the pulping process, which may have accumulated while the digester was down for an extended period of time. It is believed there could have been several possible ignition sources. The company has implemented enhanced procedures and protections to prevent future such explosions. International Paper also said the cleanup of homes is now complete, but the citizen’s information line remains in place at 968-4208.
