Ever since Hurricane Ivan washed away protective dunes on Santa Rosa Island, Fort Pickens Road has been prone to flooding from even routine weather events. Dan Brown, Park Superintendent of the Gulf Islands National Seashore, said normal storms can dump four feet of sand on the road, which can take about 10 days to 2 weeks to dig back out. Now a 2.4 million-dollar project to move a one and a half mile section of the road away from the Gulf has been completed and the old road will be removed.
