Road repairs are still ongoing in Gulf Islands National Seashore after Hurricane Nate damaged the roads. Brent Everitt, a spokesman for Gulf Islands National Seashore, said the park service was working to reopen the two roads as soon as possible, but repairing State Road 399 has been a priority because it is a hurricane evacuation route. He said the road should be open before early December. Dan Brown, superintendent of the Gulf Islands National Seashore, says the federal government spent a total of 25 million dollars rebuilding the road to Fort Pickens after Hurricanes Ivan and Dennis in 2004 and 2005 and could eventually decide it is too expensive to continue rebuilding the road each time it is damaged by storms.
