Jeff Bergosh is the new chairman of the Escambia County Board of County Commissioners and one of his first proposals is to add a fifth-cent to the tourist development tax that would go toward the Escambia County Sheriff’s Office. It would add an estimated 1.3 million dollars more a year to his budget. The tourist development tax is a 4-cent tax in Escambia County charged to people staying in hotels and motels. Under his plan the county would match any funds the sheriff spends from the law enforcement trust fund on the school resource officer program, and return up to 50 percent of unspent money from the Sheriff’s Office budget back to the agency. Bergosh said the proposal was just a starting point for discussion and pointed out that Okaloosa, Walton and Bay county have a five-cent tax.
