COAL BARGE STILL GROUNDED

Efforts are still being made to recover a coal barge that ran aground on a sandbar near Fort Pickens Monday night after it broke loose from a tow on the Intercoastal Waterway. Four barges moving the coal from Mobile to the Gulf Power Plant Crist on the Escambia River broke away from the tow in bad weather. Three of the barges were recovered, but one still remained grounded in the Fort Pickens area as of Thursday. Gulf Power spokesman Jeff Rogers said tugboats attempted to free the barge, but were unsuccessful. Rogers said the coal shouldn’t create any environmental problems if it comes in contact with water.
