Escambia County Commissioners will consider a proposal for solving the daily traffic congestion on West Nine Mile Road at their meeting this Thursday. A Florida Department of Transportation project would relocate Navy Federal Way to the east and install a flyover so an elevated West Nine Mile Road would pass over Navy Federal Way, allowing it to continue to the Interstate 10 interchange. Proponents of the project, say it would unclog the roads, but residents and developers are concerned an overpass might negatively impact property values and quality of life. The county had considered constructing can exit to I-10 through the Florida Welcome Center, but unexpected construction and costs killed the idea.
