RE-ROUTING HIGHWAY 98

At public workshop the Okaloosa-Walton Transportation Planning Organization invited public input for a proposal to re-route Highway 98 through downtown Fort Walton Beach in order to increase pedestrian usage and parking. The plan involves shifting the four-lane highway out of the downtown district. That would allow the downtown corridor to be reduced to a two-lane road and would create 80 to 90 parking spots in the downtown area. The estimated total cost of the project is about 23 million dollars. The goal is to coincide the realignment with the construction of the new Brooks Bridge in 2022.
