The Pensacola News Journal is reporting the University of West Florida will not renew its contract with the Confucius Institute, a state-affiliated installation of the Chinese government. U.S. Senator Marco Rubio condemned the institute for its representation of China’s history and policies at Florida academic institutions. He sent a letter to UWF President Martha Saunders, asking her to sever ties with the institute and copied the university’s trustees on the letter. George Ellenberg, senior vice president and provost at UWF, said lack of student interest was a factor in the decision not to renew the contract. As part of the agreement students could study abroad, but Ellenberg said none opted for the semester-exchange program.
