CRAB ISLAND BUSINESS OWNER CITED

As Tropical Storm Alberto approached the Okaloosa County, Stann Shipp decided to move his floating business – Waterworks, a floating concession stand and water sports rental shop – to safer waters, so he moored it in his Destin backyard. However, Shipp was issued a citation for violating a city ordinance that prohibits floating structures from being in city waters and will have to appear in court. Doug Rainer, public information officer for the city of Destin, said it is a safety issue and businesses are encouraged to keep their floating structures out of the city limits or to move them to commercial marinas. Shipp thinks it is more of a political issue because the City Council wants to move floating businesses away from Crab Island.
