Agriculture Commissioner Adam Putnam says his office has determined the wildfire that devastated Eastpoint in Franklin County Sunday night was caused by a prescribed burn ordered by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission. No explanation has been given about how the prescribed burn, which was being conducted by a company contracted by the FWC on June 18th, rekindled a week later and spread outside its containment area. It eventually burned 800 acres and destroyed 36 homes, but no serious injuries were reported. The state’s Division of Risk Management said residents may file partial settlement claims for up to $5,000 per person to cover emergency living expenses.
