Three weeks ago the Santa Rosa Sheriff’s Office started issuing Narcan to deputies – the drug that can quickly reverse the effects of an opioid overdose – and they’ve already saved three lives. Santa Rosa County Sheriff Bob Johnson says all patrol deputies and school resource officers now carry Narcan and requires no specialized training to administer as a nasal spray. Deputies often reach an overdose victim before an ambulance. Sheriff Johnson pointed out that even if a person is unconscious for some other reason Narcan will not harm them. The sheriff’s office spent just over $13,000 to buy 175 boxes of Narcan. Each box contains two doses.
