SEWAGE SPILL

The Florida Department of Environmental Protection said a water and sewer failure Monday night led to more than 1,200 gallons of sewage escaping from a manhole and leaking into Veterans Park and Choctawhatchee Bay. The Okaloosa County Water and Sewer Island lift station at 1262 Miracle Strip Parkway experienced two system failures about 9:30 p.m. The wastewater flowed into a storm drain system, which had an outfall in the wetlands of Veterans Park and eventually Choctawhatchee Bay. County crews responded and had the spill contained by about 9:30 a.m. Tuesday, and were continuing cleanup and disinfection efforts.
