MEDICAL MARIJUANA FIRING

The city of Valparaiso’s employee of the year for 2016 has been fired for refusing to stop using medical marijuana. Jonathan Smith – a cable technician for the city-owned cable company – said he received the marijuana prescription for pain and was informed that he had tested positive for drug use during a random screening. City Manager Carl Scott, notified Smith because he had a legitimate recommendation from a physician for the use of medical marijuana, he should be given the opportunity to discontinue the use of marijuana and submit to another drug test. Valparaiso’s workplace policy prohibits illegal drugs and specifically includes the use of medical marijuana. Smith said when he told city officials was not going to stop using the marijuana he was prescribed he was fired.
