The Florida Department of Health says 13 percent of Florida adults smoked in 2017, but those who do smoke go through more tobacco than average smokers nationally. The findings show that a Florida smoker on average puffs 14.6 cigarettes a day compared to 11.4 cigarettes per day in the rest of the country. But Florida smokers try to quit more often too. Almost 60 percent of adult smokers in Florida made an attempt to quit in 2017, compared to 49 percent nationally. It is estimated that smoking-related health care costs will total 86.3 billion dollars over the next ten years.
