Gulf Island National Seashore Superintendent Dan Brown said the next time Fort Pickens Road is destroyed by a storm, the federal government may decide not to repair it. Since Fort Pickens Road and Highway 399 were built the federal government has spent more than $50 million repairing them after a storm. However, Escambia County Commissioner Grover Robinson said the county has offered to help repair the road and that the board of County Commissioners has offered the National Seashore the use of equipment. Commissioner Robinson said county commissioners will take a vote for support of Fort Pickens Road in the next county commission meeting on Thursday.
