A Milton police officer shot a suspect in the chest yesterday after the man stole two vehicles, crashed one of them, then charged at the officer with a knife. Milton Police Chief Tony Tindell said the officer involved was not injured and acted in self-defense and the suspect is expected to survive. Tindell said the suspect stole a vehicle in Santa Rosa County, abandoned it, then stole a pickup and fled from a pursuing Milton Police office. After crashing the truck near the entrance to Whiting Field entrance on Highway 87, he charged at the officer with a knife, and was shot. The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is investigating.
