HURRICANE MICHAEL LOSSES

In the three months since Hurricane Michael came ashore at Mexico Beach more than 102,000 people have registered for assistance and 16 counties have qualified for federal aid. Senate Banking and Insurance Chairman Doug Broxson said legislators must come up with a package that can be submitted to Congress to deal with the problems in the affected areas. Some of the largest losses were agricultural. Cotton farmers lost most of the season’s crop, which was ready for harvesting when it was swept away by the 155 mph winds from the storm. 2.8 million acres of forest land suffered damage and timber farmers sustained more than 1.3 billion dollars in losses from the October 10th storm. Aquaculture along the Gulf Coast, including oyster farming, suffered 80 percent to 100 percent losses.
