The Pensacola City Council would like to name the new Pensacola Bay Bridge after city native Gen. Daniel “Chappie” James. The council voted 6-1 to pass a resolution asking the Florida Legislature to name the bridge after the famed Air Force general. The Legislature will have to vote to change the name, otherwise the new bridge will retain the present name as the Philip D. Beall Sr. Memorial Bridge. Beall was a state senator from Pensacola who died in office shortly after being elected Senate president in 1943. The bridge was named for him in 1962. Beall’s grandson, Kirke Beall, has been fighting to keep his grandfather’s name on the bridge, but has said he’d support sharing the name with James. However, organizers behind the push to name the bridge after James have rejected that idea.
