The Pensacola News Journal is reporting that the old Pensacola Beach welcome sign that has greeted beachgoers for more than a decade, will soon be replaced. The new sign will use modern LED lights instead of neon lights. David Forte, public works director for Escambia County, said the sign was expected to come down this month, but there has been a delay as the county and the contractor work out where and how the old sign will be transported. The current sign needs to be replaced because of rust damage and the increased cost of maintenance. The $263,000 contract has a deadline of mid-March.
