The State Attorney’s Office says an Escambia deputy who shot and wounded a suspect after he struck the deputy with a car was justified in firing his weapon. On November 10th, Deputy Matthew Housam approached Antonio Smith, who was sitting in his car, attempting to arrest him on a warrant when Smith accelerated toward Housam, striking the deputy with the car. Housam was able to fire one shot at the windshield before he was struck, hitting Smith in the arm. Deputy Housam was treated and released, and Smith underwent surgery for his wound. The State Attorney concluded that Housam’s actions were reasonable and justifiable.
