Save Pensacola Beach, the group who supported the non-binding referendum on the future of Pensacola Beach, wants the county to make it a county ordinance. The Escambia County Commission passed a resolution last year that prohibited any privatization through the sale or lease of currently un-leased properties on Santa Rosa Island, and voters approved the referendum by more than 80 percent. The issue is complex and the county has to decide how to tax leased land on the island and what a fair lease fee will be. Commission Chairman Lumon May suggested that Commissioner Robert Bender, whose district includes Pensacola Beach, meet with the group to discuss writing an ordinance.
