FATAL HIT AND RUN ARREST

The Florida Highway Patrol says a 42-year-old man has been arrested following a deadly hit-and-run crash in Escambia County early Wednesday morning. Troopers say just before 2 a.m., a pickup truck driven by James Champitto, was westbound on Nine Mile Road, approaching the intersection of Plainfield Avenue, and struck and killed a pedestrian crossing the roadway near the Dodges Store and then left the scene. Champitto was arrested six hours later and booked into the Escambia County Jail on charges of leaving the scene of a crash with a fatality, and two counts of driving with a suspended license. The name of pedestrian has not yet been released.
