DEFUNIAK SPRINGS ACCIDENTAL SHOOTING

The DeFuniak Springs Police Department says a 7-year-old child may have fired a handgun outside a school bus yesterday afternoon. Officers responded to North 20th Street about 3:30 p.m. and investigators determined that the 7-year-old had found a 9 mm Ruger pistol in a vehicle in front of a home and fired a round in the air as he was showing it to some other children who had just gotten off a school bus. The child reportedly put the gun back inside the vehicle before deputies arrived.  No one was injured and Police Chief Mark Weeks said while the investigation is continuing, no charges are being sought.
