BEACH SIGN REPLACEMENT

Earlier this year, Escambia County officials decided to replace the neon sign in Gulf Breeze that points the way to Pensacola Beach with an LED version. The project was to be completed in February, but Joy Tsubooka (“Sa-Boo-Ka”), spokeswoman for the county, said the replacement won’t happen before the end of May. Tsubooka said the plan was delayed for a variety of reasons including construction of special crates to hold the old sign, which will be auctioned by the county. Robert Bender, the Escambia County Commissioner who represents the beach, said county leaders did not want work on the sign happening over spring break. Versions of the sign have been in place in Gulf Breeze since the early 1960s.
