OKALOOSA SCHOOL SUPERINTENDENT APPEAL

The attorney for suspended Okaloosa County School Superintendent Mary Beth Jackson maintains that Gov. Rick DeSantis acted without clear authority when he removed Jackson from office and cited court rulings from 1893 stating that a governor could suspend an officer from only the current term of office. Jackson contends she was suspended for actions taken as superintendent prior to her 2016 re-election. The Florida Senate has been asked to hear Jackson’s appeal of her suspension but is waiting until the Florida Supreme Court reviews her case. Governor DeSantis said one of he reasons he suspended Jackson was for her failure to take action on reported child abuse cases in 2015 and 2016.
