BAY COUNTY SCHOOL DISTRICT LAYOFFS

Bay County School Superintendent Bill Husfelt says without financial help from Tallahassee the school district will be forced to lay off about 600 employees in the aftermath of Hurricane Michael. The district is projecting a 37 million-dollar loss in revenue and 250 million-dollar cost to rebuild schools and repair damage incurred from the storm. Husfelt said the repeated failure of federal and state politicians to pass any major legislation for hurricane relief funds is “mind boggling,” and implored legislators for assistance. He said since the storm, the district has lost 3,679 students, resulting in a decrease of 12.4 million dollars in funding and that number is expected to double next year.
