GULF COAST PASSENGER RAIL SERVICE

Gulf coast passenger rail service has received a 33 million-dollar federal grant, but it won’t include train service to Atmore, Pensacola, or connections further east. The cost to restore passenger rail service to the Gulf Coast is estimated at about 66 million dollars and the grant will cover about half that amount. However, Alabama Governor Kay Ivey opposed the plan, and Alabama is contributing no funds so the train will not continue to Atmore, Pensacola or other parts of Florida. The new passenger rail service is expected to begin in about two years and will stop four times per day across its route.
