A report made public by the State Attorney’s Office says for several years, leaders at Milton High School paid thousands of dollars to athletic coaches who weren’t certified to coach, weren’t performing the duties they were being paid for or were coaching teams that didn’t even exist. The report said several coaches at Milton High School received stipends ranging from $1,500 to $3,000 per school year in under-the-table deals approved by Athletic Director Murry Rutledge, Principal Tim Short and former Principal Mike Thorpe. State Attorney Bill Eddins said his office became involved with the school district’s investigation when a citizen made a criminal complaint against the district. Eddins said his office found no evidence of criminal wrongdoing, but did find a lack of oversight and a failure to comply with school district policies.
