The Florida NAACP has filed a federal lawsuit challenging the Florida law which requires former felons to pay restitution, fines, and fees prior to getting their voting rights restored. The NAACP says the bill punishes people based on their wealth by forcing those convicted of felonies to repay all fines, fees, and other monetary penalties associated with their convictions, or face disenfranchisement. In November of 2018, Florida voters approved Amendment 4 which restored the rights to former felons in the state once they’ve completed their sentences or go on probation.
