FLORIDA FLOOD MAPS OUTDATED

Hurricane Michael destroyed 70 percent of the homes and businesses in Mexico Beach. But because flood maps hadn’t been updated in 10 years 80 percent of those structures were uninsured because the Federal Emergency Management Agency placed them in flood zone “X” – areas that have low-to-moderate risks for flooding. FEMA acknowledges the maps need updating and says it is in the process of doing so. Many parts of Escambia County haven’t been updated since 2002. Parts of Panama City Beach, haven’t been updated since 2010. The City of Port St. Joe, had its maps last updated in 2009 and Franklin County maps were last updated in 2014.
